Dr Paul Nsubuga Semugoma, a Ugandan medical doctor and human rights activist, has been under arrest for the past 48 hours and is facing the threat of deportation to his country of birth.
A group of South African human rights organisations are urgently attempting to halt his deportation as Paul is “wanted” in Uganda for his activism around lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues in his country.
Dr. Kevin Rebe co-leads the Health4Men project in Cape Town. He is a specialist physician who has specialised in HIV and infectious diseases. Kevin has a particular interest in sexual health issues affecting MSM (men who have sex with men, irrespective of their sexual orientation) and has published widely on diverse aspects of HIV.
The STAR Newspaper spoke to Dr. Rebe about the complexities that some men who have sex with men and transgender women sometimes have to endure to get proper medical care in South Africa.
