Qwelane will serve as an example

Three years ago John Qwelane published a column featuring an illustration which depicted a goat and a man being united in holy matrimony. The column compared homosexuality to bestiality, claiming that allowing gay marriage meant that South African society was only a short step away from allowing human’s to marry animals.

These are details that appeared in an article in The Star. The article quoted Health4Men’s Glenn de Swardt who felt that the ruling by the Johannesburg Equality Court would set an example for healthcare practitioners who were often hostile to men who have sex with men (MSM).

Media coverage following the Anova coordinated Top2Btm symposium, which was held in Cape Town last week, has revealed that one of the main obstacles for MSM attempting to access HIV-related care was stigma and prejudice.

Health4Men is an Anova project which specialises in providing quality health care for MSM, with clinics in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
