In partnership with the Amsterdam-based organisation Mainline,
and with sponsoring by Aids Fonds, the programme has been implemented. (Greater
Cape Town only). It includes a needle and syringe exchange programme in order
to negate the risks associated with needle sharing, including HIV and hepatitis
C transmission.
Glenn de Swardt, Health4Men’s programme manager explains: “We
certainly do not encourage any form of recreational substance abuse. However,
we recognise that many gay and bisexual men do use such substances and that these
behaviours impact on their sexual health because of increased high-risk
behaviour. While we’re particularly concerned about men who inject, the
programme will include non-injecting drug users and support them to not start
injecting drugs.â€
An important component of the programme, which is unique in an
African context, is the dissemination of topical information for drug users.
This includes information on taking antiretroviral medication when using
recreational drugs, the impact of street drugs on the immune system, and
information on where to get help to stop using such substances.
The programme is supported by a series of drug-related fact
sheets which is available at any Health4Men in the greater Cape Town area or go
