
Dr. Oscar talks about testing
Health4Men’s Dr. Oscar Radebe has spoken out on the benefits of regular HIV-testing in popular gay magazine Exit.
The doctor recommended that people engaging in high risk behaviors should be tested for HIV every 3 months. For those with less risky lifestyles, testing should happen every 6 months or once a year.
Oscar’s interview emphasised the need to test for HIV even if symptoms are not present mainly because early detection of HIV meant earlier initiation of HIV treatment.
The benefits of early initiation of HIV treatment are numerous. Among those mentioned by Oscar were the advantage of better avoiding AIDS-defining illnesses and responding to treatment better.
